How to Move AND Save Money: Do’s and Don’ts for Success

save money while movingMoving a household can be an exciting time.

It can also become a chore, as it’s often a process that involves a considerable amount of time and mental energy, plus more than just some pocket change. Even if you have a corporate relocation to offset the moving expenses, there are some strategic ways to help keep more money in your pocket for either “just for fun” or to make potential updates at the new place.

Is it possible to move and save money, too? We’ve got a few helpful do’s and don’ts for you to try on your next move.

Do start with a proper estimate.

Having a rough idea of how much you intend to move, and how far, will help you gauge what is a fair and reasonable estimate. This can be done through online moving calculators that factor in the square footage and distance for your move. From there, you can secure in-home or online estimates from professionals.

Do get rid of the excess.

Moving unnecessary and unwanted items just adds to the bill. So aim to declutter and remove all that you can. Begin with five minutes per day, gradually working up to an hour a day. To start, gather and divide the items you’re thinking about removing from your home into several broad categories like: household décor, books & music, sentimental items, and clothing & shoes. Ask yourself, Is this something I plan to regularly use? If it’s a No, then the solution is probably to toss or donate it.

Do include some bulky items in the sale of your home.

That specialty refrigerator, basement work-out center, or the gorgeous custom window treatment might not fit in the new place, so it’s better to include it in the purchase of your home. And voila, no need to move it with you!

Don’t choose the movers just for the lowest bid.

Make sure you’re working with professionals that will safely and successfully move your belongings so you don’t end up getting nickel-and-dimed in the long run. On occasion, a low bid equals low quality, and nobody needs that. Better to find reputable movers who ensure your goods are safe and secure than broken and burdensome.

Don’t forget to cancel and start your utilities.

Work with your service providers to ensure a seamless transition. (No need to pay for a hotel if you forgot to turn on the heat!) Sometimes you can even find a deal in a new place for TV and Internet subscriptions.

Don’t bring anything that’s not practical or not allowed by law.

Make plans for giving away or donating things like paint cans, propane, gasoline, and cleaning supplies. For more tips on what not to move, check out our previous post.
