What NOT to Move When You’re Moving

Tips From Our Expert Moversmoving and storage

While it’s easy to feel like everything you own must surely come with you to your next place, when you’re planning a move, there are actually certain things that shouldn’t remain in your next home.

That’s a combination of both practical and legal reasons.

From a practical standpoint, what shouldn’t you plan to move with you? As any moving expert will tell you, a huge part of the moving process is clearing out junk and de-cluttering your home. Plus economically speaking, there’s no reason to pay to store or transport items that you’re going to part with soon enough.

What all should be on that list? Apartmenttherapy.com has compiled a list of 50 things you probably don’t want to take with you. Here are a few of our favorites:

1. Clothes that no longer fit you
2. Shoes you don’t need or want
3. Outdated electronics (like old phones or VHS tapes)
4. Posters you bought in college
5. Expired food
6. Expired medications
7. Expired makeup
8. Stray cords
9. Non-essential paperwork — just shred it
10. Worn-out sheets and towels
11. Shower curtains — these can get gross, so just replace it
12. Instruction manuals
13. Tax returns — shred and keep an electronic copy on the cloud
14. Old bills and receipts
15. Your junk drawer
16. Baby gear and kid toys your family has outgrown
17. Curtains
18. DIY décor and bulk items such as floor tiles, wallpaper, etc.
19. Excess luggage
20. Broken stuff that isn’t easily repaired

In addition to all the home de-cluttering, there are certain items that are restricted by federal law. The Department of Transportation will not allow any professional moving company to transport certain items, especially if they are flammable or explosive under pressure. These include:

  • Matches, nail polish/remover, paint thinners, paints/varnishes
  • Ammunition, car batteries, charged scuba tanks, darkroom chemicals
  • Household batteries, kerosene, liquid bleach, loaded guns
  • Fertilizer, fire extinguishers, fireworks, fuels/oils
  • Pesticides, poisons, pool chemicals, propane tanks
  • Aerosol cans, ammonia, charcoal/lighter fluid, cleaning solvents
  • Rubbing alcohol, Sterno (quick flame) fuel, weed killer

Once you’ve finished the de-cluttering, then it’s time for the big move.
