January. The new year. A new start. If you’ve got “getting organized” on your 2022 New Year’s Resolution list, then tackling that goal can be key to helping you unlock your other goals.
Research has shown that if your surroundings are cluttered (be it your home or office), that can restrict your ability to focus and process information. So whether it’s intended or not, having clutter In our surroundings can sometimes block our ability to think clearly and keep us from reaching other goals. So what’s someone to do? Begin with some heavy duty, once-a-season de-cluttering to remove physical clutter around you. As a practical matter to help you prioritize your efforts, start with a single room or just one closet.
You can begin with this 5-step plan:
- Pull everything out – Take a look at everything in the room (or your entire wardrobe), and try to separate the items into three simple piles: keep, donate/ sell, and throw away. It’s that simple! Experts suggest that if you haven’t used or worn an item in the past six months, get rid of it. (But we say, follow your instincts if you think it still has a chance to bring you joy!)
- Clean the place – Once the area is entirely emptied, give it a thorough cleaning.
- Evaluate the space – Begin with a blank slate, and start by envisioning how everything will best fit in the space that you have. Now is also a good time to consider hiring an outside planner to help you reimagine the space most effectively.
- Sort through your “keep” pile – Add the items back into your space based on their frequency of use, type (of garment or kitchen tool, for instance), or size and color.
- Put on the finishing touches – For instance in a closet, update your hangers to all one single type. Or splurge on new kitchen drawer dividers or drawer liners to create a seamless look. One final detail to consider is the proper lighting for your space.
