Try to join something — or at least get your kids involved in something right away. The local school, a book club, a recreation league, or a place of worship could all be key places to connect with others in the new city and become more acquainted with the surrounding area.
Head Back to School
Whether you have kids or not, the local school district is another fabulous way to get to know more people in your community. From watching high school football games, to theater tickets, to music concerts and more — think of them as a golden opportunity to learn more about your city and even meet some potential new friends. Serving as a volunteer in the district is another way to get to know people quickly. And if you do have school-age children, be sure to register them as soon as possible.
Host a Get Together
Once you have officially moved and unpacked your new place, invite some neighbors over for a casual party. It could be ice cream on the patio, desserts on the deck, or some games on the back lawn. Just something fun and festive to meet a few of the families on the block or in your building complex.
Pitch In
Try to identify somewhere that you and your family could volunteer. This could be a local hospital, animal shelter, a church, the food pantry, or wherever else you’re passionate about making a difference. Even if you’re only giving a few hours a week of service, your time and effort really makes a huge impact on some much-deserving animals, workers, and the community.
