How Paint Can Change Your Cabinets and Wood Furniture

Many of us would love to do a complete bathroom makeover. But perhaps that level of transformation just isn’t in your allowance for time or budget this spring, so making some simple changes in the look and feel of your bathroom could be as easy as grabbing a can of paint and some basic supplies. (For more great makeover ideas, all at under $500, check out this post.)

Here’s our how-to guide to help guide you along the way.

Step 1: Gather your supplies.
Here’s what you’ll need:
• Hardware (if you want to replace it)
• 220 grit sandpaper
• Paper towels (or old t-shirts)
• Your choice: chalk paint or primer combined with a semi-gloss paint
• A high-quality paint brush
• Drop cloths

Step 2: Determine the hardware situation.
If you’re replacing hardware, determine what you’d like to do, since whenever you’re changing the drawer handles or knobs, it could mean drilling new holes. If you keep the same size, no need to change or fill in any holes with wood putty.

Step 3: Do some sanding.
Smooth out the grain, and give the paint a good surface to stick to. Although it’s tempting, don’t skip this step, as proper sanding helps to ensure a smooth, even finish.

Step 4: Clean the wood.
Clean the wood to help remove the sandpaper dust. This could be mineral spirits and a clean cotton rag, or a wood cleaner. One to try: White Lightning, mixed with water, to help de-grease and remove all debris from your furniture or cabinets.

Step 5: Prime — if you’re using semi-gloss.
(Or skip this step if you’re using a chalk paint.) Try to use a white primer for light colors or gray primer under darker paint colors. After a thin coat or two, let dry for 12 hours or more.

Step 6: Paint.
Mix the paint well, and use a clean brush for a very thin first coat, then wait at least 10 minutes and add another light coat until it’s painted to your satisfaction. Expert remodeler Bob Vila suggests five thin coats is far superior to one thick coat of paint! Of course, if you’re using a chalk paint, you might even need only a single coat.
