Getting Your Home Ready for the Holidays: Your Weekly Cleaning Checklist

For many of us, the old song rings true: There’s no place like home for the holidays. And that could be especially true this year, now that many people have only gradually begun going out again.

But how do we find a way to enthusiastically enjoy our time at home? More importantly, how can we find a systematic, yet realistic, way to keep it all clean?

Here’s an easy-to-use house cleaning plan to put into play, incorporating both what to finish once a day, as well as once a week.

Weekly Checklist

Mondays: Clean the Kitchen

  • Clean fronts of appliances
  • Wipe down inside of microwave
  • Clean the sink
  • Sweep and mop the floor

Tuesdays: Tackle the Bedrooms

  • Dust and vacuum the bedrooms
  • Clean the mirror(s)

Wednesdays: Living Areas

  • Dust, and then vacuum or mop the main living areas (e.g. the living room, family room, and dining room)

Thursdays: Take out the trash

  • Empty all the small and large trash cans (and prepare for weekly pickup if you have that)
  • Remove recycling
  • Note — this day could be swapped for another day that’s just before your municipal trash pick-up.

Fridays: Bedrooms — one more time

  • Dust and vacuum the bedrooms again, or for the first time if there are multiple rooms to tackle.

Saturdays: Clean the bathroom(s).
