Clean up the Kid Clutter

If you’re putting your house on the market soon or you already have had some walkthroughs, you know your home has to be ready to be shown at the drop of a hat. That means even the kids’ clutter has to be easily stowed. There would likely be mutiny if you banned toys from now until the move, so instead, use these tips to keep the playroom organized and just a moment’s notice from ready for company.

Assess the mess

If you’re preparing to move, there’s never been a better time to minimize clutter than now! Look around the play area- what hasn’t been cuddled or read in a while? Which games have your kiddos outgrown? Instead of transferring the excess to the next house, sell or gift older items. (Tip: Teachers are always looking for books for their classroom libraries. Reach out to one you know or put out a notice on social media. You’ll make an educator and his or her students very happy, and you’ll have less to pack).

Toy cycles

We’ve all seen the toddler who has every toy in the world but chooses to play with the cardboard box or pots and pans. Novelty is a huge draw for kids, so save space (and cleanup time) by making a cycle system of toys. If you have stacks of books, you know they’re not all getting read in one day. Keep only a handful on the playroom shelves. Store the rest where you can easily get to them and switch them out later in the week. Toys your kids haven’t seen in a while are suddenly new and exciting again, and you get the benefit of a less cluttered space. Win, win!

Manage the mess

Set some ground rules for your kids and their much loved space. Certain bins store particular toys and at the end of the day, everything is in its place. Try five minute cleanups: all-out, short bursts of effort throughout the day to tackle the clutter before it gets out of control (we play music during ours). This gets even the littlest ones involved and keeps the playroom mess at a manageable minimum. Think about what types of rules would work best for your family and then stick to them.
