Free Things to Do in Kansas City

There is a lot to do in Kansas City, from the sports, to entertainment, to dining out, you won’t be tempted to stay home. Once your Kansas City mover has unpacked the last box, you’ll be ready to go out and find something to do in your new town. Here are our best tips for free things to do in KC.

  1. Lakeside Nature Center. Explore the center, and take advantage of the wildlife education programs for all ages with live animals! There is also a hiking trail, picnic pavilion, and a native wildlife exhibit. You can also rent the space in a wooded area for events.
  2. Boulevard Brewing Company Tour. In 1989, John McDonald started this vintage Bavarian brew house in a turn-of-the-century brick building on Kansas City’s historic Southwest Boulevard. Nineteen states now import this full flavor beer with a distinctive character.
  3. Crown Center. This is a 3 level mall of 60 shops and many restaurants, but it also holds Hallmark Cards, Inc. corporate headquarters. Hallmark has a free Visitor’s Center with exhibits about the evolution of Hallmark cards, and Kaleidoscope, a creative art experience for kids 5-12. You’ll also find puppet shows, fashion shows, magic shows, and Crayola Christmas land.
  4. Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Enjoy this open light-filled atrium as you enter into their permanent collection, temporary exhibits, free public programs, special events, and eat at the Cafe Sebastienne. This museum is the leader among modern and contemporary art museums in the U.S. They have up to 12 special exhibitions each year, of well-known, mid-career, and emerging artists.
  5. Shoal Creek Living History Museum. This is a village of more than 20 authentic 19th century buildings from 1807-1885. There is a log cabin, clapboard structures, and an antebellum brick mansion home. It sits on 80 acres in Kansas City’s North Hodge Park. They host special programs, tours, and reenactments.
