5 Things Not to Skimp On When Moving

Moving to a new home takes a lot of time, effort, and – of course – money.

To make things run as smoothly as possible, consider the things you should spend more money and time on when moving.

1. Use an American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) certified mover. AMSA has a seven point screening process that includes background checks and assurances of quality.  Ask family and friends for referrals of an established moving company with a reliable reputation. Use the Better Business Bureau or Angie’s List to screen candidates.

2. Get an in-home estimate. Actually, get estimates from three moving companies, and then choose the one that meets your budget and needs. Have them explain in detail the services that the estimate covers. Remember to show them everything that needs to be moved, including items in the garage, shed, basement, and attic.

3. Use the right packing materials. Use quality boxes in different sizes, small boxes for heavy items, and large boxes for lighter items. Have a packing tape dispenser with heavy-duty tape to make assembling and closing boxes a snap. Use wrapping paper, not newspaper, as the ink might rub off on your items.

4. Plan ahead for moving day. Use up or give away food supplies and clean out appliances. Arrange for child and pet care for the day of the move. Be prepared to regulate the temperature in the house with fans or heaters, as the doors will be open all day.

5. Label boxes diligently. The last thing you need is to end up at your new home with no idea where the dishes, pillows, or lamps are located. Use a color coding system for each room, red for the master bedroom, green for the kitchen, and so on. Also, label each box with an A, B, or C. Boxes labeled “A” get unpacked first, “B” second, and “C” last.

Saving time and money is valuable, but sometimes spending it can be the right thing to do to avoid problems on moving day.
