Chicago Is One of the Best Cities in America

My Kinda Town: Chicago Is Tops in U.S.A.moving and storage services in Chicago, IL

The Best Cities in the U.S. Readers’ Choice awards were recently announced in the 35th annual Condé Nast Traveler survey. And the Second City is second no more. Chicago leads the list of Best Big Cities, while Charleston, S.C. topped the Best Small Cities rankings.

Nearly a quarter million readers responded to this year’s survey, which also included hotels, airlines, cruises, and islands. After surviving the incredibly bumpy tourist-y season of the past two years, cities are officially back on the map.

If you’re planning a relocation, looking for an urban vacation or simply in search of a dynamic weekend getaway, the cities on these lists offer everything from cutting-edge arts scenes to eye-catching architecture to fabulous restaurants and activities, for movers and shakers galore.

How did the nation’s third-most populous city, Chicago, top the most popular list? According to Traveler readers, Chicago is a “world-class destination known for its impressive architecture, first-rate museums, brilliant chefs, and massive brewing scene.” Many people start with the downtown areas like the Magnificent Mile and move their way into the Gold Coast, but there are 77 distinct neighborhoods worthy of exploring, each with their own flavor of inventive restaurants, inviting corner bars, and a funky arts scene.

Chicago is also home to two major international airports, O’Hare and Midway, making cheaper flights from either coast or the central U.S.A. much more accessible.

In the end, the Midwest friendly vibe reigns supreme. Traveler notes that “no matter where you go, some of the most pleasant people you’ll find anywhere” are what one should expect to meet. We could not agree with their readership more, as we featured several of our favorite must-dos in a recent post, all about exploring the Windy City’s highlights in just one day. (Think of it as re-living a particular Ferris Beuller’s day off.)

Finally, Chicagoland (the nickname for the city and its surrounding suburbs) is home to a thriving business community including several Fortune 500 companies, such as Abbott Laboratories, Allstate, Conagra, Kraft Heinz, McDonald’s, United Airlines, and Walgreens.
