Your February Checklist: How to Spruce Up Your House This Month

Ah, February. The holidays are over (and hopefully the decorations have been put away!), yet in many parts of the country, spring weather still has yet to arrive. But you don’t have to wait until “spring fever” cleaning time officially begins to start some much-needed home maintenance.

During the month of Love, keep the late-winter blues away with some extra TLC and attention devoted to your most basic of loves: your home. Whether you’re planning on moving soon and want to list your place, or you’re merely trying to fully enjoy the space where you live, try to devote some time this month checking things yourself and tackling a few home improvement projects.

We’ve scoured the Internet to find some of the best tasks to focus on during the month of February when there’s often a little less on the calendar. Don’t worry if you don’t finish all of them; just work your way through as many as you’re able to accomplish, then sit back and enjoy your success.

Freshen up the paint.

If you’ve got the urge, now might be a good time to consider a complete room update to change out the look with a new hue for you or a trendy new look to attract a buyer for a quicker sale of your home.

However, it’s also a great time to assess and touch up any chipped paint in many areas from normal wear and tear or the occasional bumps that leave marks you can clean.

Deep clean the kitchen.

There are multiple ways to seriously clean your kitchen, so we love the idea of simply choosing three from this list, then knocking it out:

  • Sanitize your garbage disposal.
  • Organize your pantry.
  • Clean and organize your cupboards.
  • Clean and organize your refrigerator and freezer.
  • Clean and organize your storage drawers.
  • Scrub your stovetop, oven, and microwave.
  • Clean the sink, cabinet, and the countertops.
  • Clean the floors.

Get “fired” up.

February is a great time to inspect any fire extinguishers in your home (this should be done annually, at a minimum), and then double-check batteries in the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. If the devices you’re using are more than 10 years old, experts recommend you consider replacing them.

Brush up the bathrooms.

Clean out the medicine cabinet by properly discarding and disposing medications that have expired or you no longer need. (This is especially true if you’re moving and planning any open houses to sell you home!) You also can do a deep clean of all bathroom surfaces and re-caulk around the bathtubs and toilets to prevent any future leaks or mold issues.

Miscellaneous upkeep.

Start by washing your bedroom linens and curtains to help remove dust, dander, and any “extra” germs or bugs. Next, do the same for the carpet in the home, especially in high-traffic areas. Now is also a great time to give your mattress some love by dusting off the box springs and rotating the mattress.

From there, consider changing your home WiFi password and any personal account passwords to help keep the electronic bugs away. Replace any burned-out lightbulbs or broken fixtures to upgrade the indoor lighting.

Following these five steps might not completely remove any symptoms of cabin-fever, but they can certainly keep you busy this month until the next season of cleaning frenzies and better weather begs for more outdoor time.
