Tips for Finding Affordable Housing in San Francisco
October 15, 2013
Whether you are renting or buying a house in the San Francisco Bay area, prices are notoriously high compared to the average US market. Here are a few tips to help you find the best value for your dollar.
Explore All of San Francisco, Not Just the Trendy Areas
Everyone loves the Mission district. Between the nostalgia and the quaint neighborhood feel, who wouldn’t want to live there? But with limited inventory and a desirable area, prices can skyrocket. If your favorite Bay area neighborhoods are too pricey, look into surrounding areas and up-and-coming neighborhoods. It might mean a slightly longer commute, but in the long run the lower monthly bills will leave you happy you expanded your search.
Be Fully Prepared
As you get more serious about your search, make sure to have your credit scores pulled, references-in-hand, and applications filled out before you tour an apartment or look at a place. Your preparedness could give you an edge over other potential buyers, and land you the house or apartment of your dreams.
Start Your Search Early
Remember: the early bird gets the worm! Make sure you are attending open houses and requesting showings well in advance of your moving date. If you’re an out-of-towner, start taking weekend trips to your new city months in advance. Moving dates tend to creep up on you quickly, so try and find a realtor before you think you’ll even need one. That way, your realtor can get a good idea of your preferences, and contact you as soon as your dream home becomes available.
