The Ultimate New House Checklist

new house checklistWhen you’re thinking about moving to a new house, then there’s an awful lot to think about. For example, What’s going to happen to all of my stuff? Where am I going to store my special fill-in-the-blank things? Will I need to stay the night at a hotel before I’m fully moved in to the new place?

Thankfully, all of these thoughts and more are problems that a trusted, professional moving company can help guide you through understanding.

The Family Handyman website has also created a list of 21 Things to prioritize when you move to a new home. We’ve compiled our favorites, below.

List it. Then love it.

First and foremost, start with a prioritized list of what to do, and when. You’ll want to focus on immediate safety issues and essentials for the first two weeks. Next up, decide: Which key tasks do you need to organize for the next two months? Finally, tier three is to give attention to the projects you’ll want to finish within the year — such as landscaping, short-term home improvement, and larger purchases.

Wait for it.

It’s been said that it’s a good idea to wait at least 12 to 18 months before you make any major renovations such as tearing down walls. Live in the space, get a feel for the lighting and pace of life, and understand the traffic flow for individual rooms and sections of the house. That can help you make more informed decisions that will drive the design.

Clear the air.

Clean off the coils on the back of the fridge. Clear the exterior dryer vent (yearly). Locate the furnace filter and replace it. (Get in the habit of changing it monthly to help extend the life of your furnace!) You’ll want to clean out the air conditioner condenser, too.

Water, water, everywhere.

To avoid having water literally everywhere, find the main water valve to turn off in case you’re having repairs done. Additionally, if there’s a home sprinkler system on the grounds, identify the local company to turn it on and off seasonally if you’re in a colder climate, or to service it regularly. Try to flush the water heater to remove any extra sediment.

Hide a key — and maybe even change the locks.

You’ll want to keep a spare key in a safe place that others wouldn’t be able to guess. Or consider changing the locks to a keyless or smart home entry system, right after you finish moving in.

Meet the neighbors.

Hopefully a new house comes with a chance at a fresh start on new friendships as well. You could host your own housewarming party, or just be sure to stop by and introduce yourself with a chance to get to know them a little bit at a non-busy time. You can also look for opportunities to explore hobbies, the local school system, a place of worship, or through a club of your choice.
