Six Amazing Chicago Transportation Tips

If you’re new to the city, life can feel complicated. Cold winters, nasty roads, numerous transportation options and traffic – can make a small trip to the grocery store complicated. At Beltmann we want to make things easier for you as you get settled into the windy city with some tips that could save you a few headaches.

Best Routes for North, South, East and West

If you want to go north or south, take Larrabee Street. If you need to go east to west take Grand Avenue. Grand Avenue is usually light on traffic and cuts diagonally from 400 N Western to Narragansett and Fullerton.

Download Ride Sharing Apps

Even though taxis are in abundance in the city, Uber and Lyft apps are extremely helpful on busy nights or in the mornings during commute times. You can check prices for each and compare. Also, download the SurgeProtector app to see where the ride-sharing services are charging surge rates.

Watertaxi to Chinatown

If you’re downtown and want to venture over to Chinatown, consider taking a water taxi. It can drop you off at Ping Tom Park and can provide a fun way to avoid parking in a busy area of the city.

Get a Pedway Map

When the weather is nasty, grab a Pedway map so you can take advantage of the underground tunnels that connect the CTA stations, City Hall, Macy’s and more!

Share a Venture Card & Save

If you have family consider only buying one unlimited Ventra Card and one pay-as-you-go. When someone ventures out, give them the unlimited so you can get your money’s worth. The card is transferable from family member to family member.

Download the vital Transit App

This app follows all buses, trains, taxis and divvy bikes real-time, so you can track your ride and be sure to catch it on-time or note any changes to routes or arrival times. It’s a MUST have for the city.

We hope these tips will help you better navigate your way around the city.  And, as always – we would love to help make your next move to Chicago or across the globe as stress-free as possible.
