How to Survive Your First Winter in Chicago

Winters in Chicago can be brutal. Lots of traffic, sub-zero wind chill and so much snow, it will make you want to jump on any plane at O’Hare heading south (yes, even some random town in Mississippi will do). Since we are headquartered in Chicago, we thought we’d give you some of our best tips for how you can best survive a Chicago winter. For those who have moved from Hawaii, Florida or the Caribbean – God have mercy on your soul, this winter WILL be a shock to your system. Beltmann Chicago Movers

Splurge for Parking

If you have a car, you will want to have a parking spot close to your home, bonus points for if it’s a covered garage. When the snow plows come through, keep in mind, they will shove the snow off to the side of the road (AKA where your car is), so some days you will have to literally dig your car out. Having a parking spot that’s covered or off the road, will save you lots of time and headache in the winter.

Run Your Fan on Low Backwards

If you’re in an old apartment building, consider running your fan backwards so that it pushes the hot air down into your living area. It may seem crazy, but it works.

Invest in Snow Boots and Wool Socks

You will most likely need a change of shoes for work. Shoe gear number 1, will include some waterproof boots and warm wool socks. Shoe number two will include anything you work in.

Get into It

If you’re going to live in a chilly environment, you might as well find some fun. Consider going ice skating or ice fishing. Skiing is only a drive away in Michigan or Wisconsin. Take advantage of the snow and ski down some relaxing runs. Drink hot cocoa in the ski lodge and watch it snow. You will find something you enjoy about it.

Crockpot Dinners

Get to know your crockpot and have a warm dinner ready for when you get home. Chicken or soup is great on a cold winter day. And, you can save yourself time by keeping it on low throughout the day.
