Home Theater 101: How to Choose the Right Projector

Tips from Professionals when Building a Home Theaterhome theater 101

As the weather turns cooler around this time of year, it’s not unusual to start thinking about more indoor activities. Watching a movie in the theater can be a fabulously fun time with family and friends.

However, moving a cozy night indoors with some freshly popped popcorn, a little surround sound, and snuggles with people you love to be around can be equally entertaining — if you have the right equipment.

What’s the secret? Having a solid projector is the key. But how do you know which one is best for you? A few key components to consider if you’re in the market for a projector …

  1. Consider your budget.

Depending on all the bells and whistles, you can get a projector for around $100 up to much more than that, approximately $3,500. One option is to purchase an inexpensive, no-frills projector from Amazon, or try a better-quality manufacturer with higher resolution such as Benq.

  1. The size of your wall.

A high-quality projector TV can yield up to 100 inches of screen (keep in mind, this is measured diagonally) — so more than 8 feet across. By comparison, a 100-inch traditional or laser TV could run upwards in the budget of $10,000.

  1. The size of the room.

The next dimension to factor into the equation is the size of the room and the “throw” of the projector. Whether you attach a projector to the ceiling or not also matters.

  1. Brightness

Using a measurement called “lumens,” the amount of brightness might not be all that important if you’re mainly using the projector in a darker environment. If you’re in a very well-lit room or a space with lots of ambient background light, look for a projector with at least 2,000 lumens.

  1. Projector or laser?

When you’re using your projector in a dedicated theater room to watch movies or shows only a couple times per week, a lightbulb-based “lamp” model should serve you well and even help save you some money. However, if your projector will serve as the primary TV for watching anything in your home, it might be better to save up for a laser model for much greater longevity, plus the improved color and contrast.
