5 Tips for Moving During the Holidays

Moving in any season can feel a bit disruptive to normal life routines. And moving during the holidays? Although it might seem daunting, sometimes a relocation late in the year is the only option. Here are five tips for surviving a move in November or December.

1. Discuss your move with family and close friends.
Your family and close friends will feed off your energy, so try to make the most of a challenging situation. As best you can, think of the move as an exciting time for new beginnings. Talk about what are some “must haves” once you arrive in the new location. Is having a big family meal important? Or something that nobody really would miss? Are there family traditions you could morph to a new location? Having these discussions in advance will help navigate the transition.

2. Book your personal days and moving company early.
Fortunately, the holidays are not the busiest time of year for moving companies. However, finding open dates on the calendar can be tough with so many federal holidays and busy travel days. According to USA Today, three of the top 10 worst travel days of the year are the day before Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve. Plan ahead for days off work and to find availability for flights, rental cars and hotels — especially if you’re re-locating out-of-state or across the country.

3. Keep the decorating simple.
This is the year to streamline the decor. Consider designating a Holiday Box for your favorite decorations to keep things festive in the new locale. Another option is to simply hit the local dollar store once you land, and save the “big decorating” for next year, or the next major holiday after you’re settled in. Another option is to catch last-minute local sales as the holiday dates get closer. Having said that, get the tree and light the candles, if that brings you joy.

4. Go easy on the gift-giving.
Although finding boxes can be easy if you complete your move before Christmas or Hannukah, this is probably not the year for making a major purchase. Think “outside the box” for ways to show you care through gift cards, experiential gifts (like a museum membership), or a digital e-card to a favorite music, video, or photo website. 5. Turn your holiday greeting cards into moving announcements.
Consider sending a “new address” update to close friends and family via email, private message, or text. And then, send a printable postcard or greeting card to double as a Change of Address card. You can even get ahead of the December rush with a “Thankful for You!” card sent around Thanksgiving.

No matter what kind of move you’re making this year, remember to keep the heart of each holiday at the focus, whether that’s showing gratitude for your family, your faith, or your future. And if you’re ready make the next step, contact Beltmann today for your free moving quote.
