5 Home Design Facts to Take the Guesswork Out of Your Life

When you’re scrolling through social media or caught up in a home improvement TV show like Fixer Upper, it’s easy to begin thinking that updating your living space or renovating and moving into a new house is a fairly simple, inexpensive process.

If only that were true.

But how do we take the guesswork out of home improvement? An Atlanta-based luxury design duo, Tavia Forbes and Monet Masters of Forbes Masters, has compiled a list of top home design truths that can help with everything from budgeting projects to planning and choosing furniture.

Here are a few of our favorite Forbes Masters suggestions.

  1. Small rooms don’t always need small furniture – It’s easy to take the “less is more” principle too far. Don’t be afraid to go bold with larger pieces and floor coverings or even let the sofa “float” away from the wall.
  1. Most projects take at least three to six months – And that’s the timeframe after all the initial planning, which could take two to four weeks just to get started. If you’re ordering custom furniture, plan for longer — add at least another 12 weeks, up to 6 months in the current supply chain shortage climate.
  1. Quality Products, Fast Turnaround, Low Cost: You can only have two – Oftentimes Forbes Masters clients are willing to sacrifice the turnaround time for a lower cost. However, if fast and cheap is your goal, then a big box retailer like IKEA or Home Depot is your friend.
  1. Your Upper and Lower cabinets don’t have to match – Yes, it’s okay to “color outside the lines” and shift gears in decorating by utilizing different cabinet bases and shelves, or even change out the countertops (from island to breakfast nook, for example).
  1. Scrap the medicine cabinet – Sure, go ahead and remove that bathroom builder-grade mirror or medicine cabinet, and swap It out for a more vintage look or open shelving. Add some drama to the look with well-positioned sconces or a pendant light.
