2023: Top Trends in Finished Basements

Our Movers Give You the Inside Scoopfinished basement trend

Now that we are a few years removed from 2020, it’s easy to wonder if anything that has shifted in the world after the global pandemic is here to stay. And one thing that appears to be here for good is more functional living space throughout the home. Finished basements are a major part of that.

Sebring Design Build has office locations in the western suburbs of Chicago and Franklin, Tenn. area, and their team has compiled a listing of the trends they see in finished basements that will carry into 2023 and beyond.

It doesn’t matter whether you want a multi-task space, a play place for kids (or kids at heart), or the ultimate home theater — the “basement dwellers” among us are moving beyond simple storage and empty areas into fully functioning spaces that add value and extend the square footage to the place you call home. (Perhaps even try these in a bonus room or spare bedroom, if your particular home doesn’t have a basement.)

These are among the hottest trends Sebring expects to see this year:

  1. Open Concept is still in vogue.
This particular trend plays on the available “open” (sans walls) real estate within a basement and can offer ample storage and utilize available light. Just keep in mind, this particular approach also minimizes privacy, in case you’re looking for that perfect man cave or “she-shed” location.

  1. Guest Suites that rival local hotels.

Perfect for adding space when you have family or friends to entertain overnight, a guest suite will often include a private bathroom and kitchenette or a wet bar. As a bonus, the room could serve as a permanent bedroom for teens or an older child moving into a more independent living space.

  1. Gyms and spas.

Workout spaces to get your body moving and home spas to relax are still quite popular. That could mean a home gym with weights or a full “spa” area with a sauna, steam shower, and/or massage area.

  1. Walkout basements.
If the home footprint allows for it (when your house is built on a hill or a slope), walkout basements add great natural light and access to the outdoors. And if the home isn’t already set up for that, a quality design-build contractor can potentially create that space for you, if you’re ready to tackle a more extensive project.

  1. Home office.

As the work-from-anywhere trend continues, having a private, well-appointed, and fully functional home office is one of the key “essential luxuries” for many homeowners. Get away from distractions of other family members, television, pets, and other hassles of daily life with a dedicated space to accomplish your work.
