20 Easy Tips to Deep Clean Your Home Without Hiring A Service

After the closing or lease is signed, even after the moving truck arrives with your household goods, there’s a good chance that your new place could use a deep cleaning this month.

Sure, you could hire a service (which is perfectly acceptable). But what if you’d like to save some cash for expenses at the new place? We’ve got 20 ideas for making your new home as spotless as possible — or even sanitizing your existing house before it goes on the market, if you’re looking to move this spring.

  1. Work high to low. Do a thorough dusting that includes the tops of all ceiling fans, plus trim on all windows and doors, and the tops of tall furniture.
  2. Move on to the walls. They often carry dust or fingerprints and need to be wiped down.
  3. Remove the furniture cushions, take them outside, and beat them to remove dust. Try to vacuum in the creases of the couch and chairs with a narrow attachment tool. If necessary, you can also spot-clean any stains with a part water-part vinegar solution.
  4. Take the books off bookshelves, then dust the shelves and, if needed, the books themselves.
  5. Vacuum carpets, then shampoo them with a hot-water rug cleaning machine. (Try renting one, if you don’t already own one.)
  6. Polish all wooden furniture with a soft cloth and furniture polish.
  7. Take down the window treatments and wash them according to the tag directions.
  8. Wipe blinds with either a microfiber rag or damp cloth.
  9. Vacuum and clean all the floors and baseboards, based on the surface type.
  10. Turn over the mattresses. Move and vacuum all around and under the bed(s).
  11. Clean your electronics with an appropriate cloth or specially made cleaning solution.
  12. Defrost the freezer. Take out all the frozen food, then wipe down the inside.
  13. Disconnect the power and then vacuum the coils on the refrigerator.
  14. Empty the fridge and wipe down the shelves with a mild soap.
  15. Wipe down the cabinets, top and front of the stove, and the range hood with a degreaser.
  16. Tackle the closets. Separate things you use from things you haven’t used for years. Sell, give away, or donate items you no longer need or want.
  17. Head outside and wash the windows, or hire a service to power-clean.
  18. Sweep and clean the porch so it’s free from cobwebs, dust, and debris.
  19. Scrub outdoor furniture for the upcoming summer season. Consider renting a power washer to remove excess mildew or grime on wood and concrete surfaces.
  20. Organize your cleaning supplies, and replace anything you depleted.

Once you’ve accomplished this level of cleaning, your spotless home will likely be a place you can enjoy for quite a while! Happy spring, to you!
