5 Ways to Save Money On Your Next Move

After contracting with your Kansas City mover, and before heading out for your new city, there are some things you can do to save a little cash on your move.

1. Be sure to get your deposit back from your gas, electric, or water utility. If you have always paid your bills on time, get a “good customer” recommendation letter that might allow you to skip the deposit on utilities in your new city.

2. Check to see if you should be given interest on your rental home deposit. Many cities require landlords to deposit these sums in the bank, and should pay you the interest. If you paid and pet deposit, and are leaving the home as you found it, ask if that is returnable.

3. Save money by getting rid of items you don’t need instead of paying to ship them. Host a rummage sale, sell through Craigslist, or donate items to Goodwill or the Salvation Army and get a receipt for your tax deductions. You might also put valuable items on consignment in a store, if you have time to wait for it to sell.

4. Seek the cheapest insurance you can find in your new city, but remember to consider customer service too. Don’t settle for what you already have, call around. You may find that your current carrier is best, but maybe not. Be sure to ask for “bundling” prices if you have auto and homeowner’s insurance with the same company.

5. Once your Kansas City mover has all your things unpacked, and you are settled in, be sure to visit the public library. Many offer programs where you can borrow art for several months with a library card. This might fill bare spots on your walls while you take the time to shop for the perfect item. Of course, you can find free rentals of movies and music, and might want to read some books about your new area’s history while you are there!
