Moving in: College Edition

Back to school season may not be here quite yet, but as with all other areas of life, getting a game plan is the best way to set yourself up for success. If you have members of your brood moving onto a college campus, this season will pose a completely different set of challenges (both logistically and emotionally!) for you. Knowing the specific hurdles you’ll face with dorm move-in before you get there is key.
Coordinate Times
It’s likely your young scholar’s move-in day is the same as thousands of other students, so figure out when the highest traffic time will be. Choosing a time of day and day of the week with fewer people and moving paraphernalia to maneuver around can aid in less overall stress. Additionally, if a dorm or shared apartment is a part of your college student’s living arrangements, be sure to touch base with the roommate beforehand to coordinate who is bringing what. No need for two mini fridges or area rugs in an already tiny space! 
Unloading
Elevators may be scarce or nonexistent on move in day, so do yourself a favor and have as many items as possible in boxes or totes with handles. You’ll also want to follow the time-honored moving tradition of having an Essentials box containing anything your college-goer will need right off the bat: disinfecting wipes, a portable fan, a clean shirt, etc.
Creative Storage
There’s no better time to practice a minimalist approach than when moving in to the dorms! Have your son or daughter pack as many items as possible in the containers in which they will remain (i.e., laundry supplies get packed and remain in the bin which will slide under the bed). Speaking of beds, if at all possible, loft it- the higher the better! You can create a lounging space or mini-kitchenette in the space you create beneath. Many universities rent lofts, or at a minimum you can use bed risers to create a storage area.
