Tips for Moving Into a House with Friends

Renting a house or an apartment with friends is one way to exert your independence, plus rooming together can save you money each month. But when you share a place with another person, problems can arise. Fortunately, there are ways to keep issues to a minimum.

  • Decide how you and your roommate will split expenses. If you can’t afford to live on your own, getting a roommate can be financially beneficial. Make sure that you both have a clear understanding of finances. For example, how much will each person contribute towards the rent? Additionally, if you decide to hire a Kansas City mover, will both of you split this expense?
  • Get your agreement in writing. Any decisions about household finances should be put in writing. You can contact an attorney and draft a cohabitation agreement, or you can draft your own agreement and sign it before a notary public.
  • Use discernment. If your friend barely pays his expenses now, what makes you think he’ll pay his share of the rent and other household bills? Be smart and choose your roommate carefully.
