How to Ensure Your Pets Have a Relaxing Move

As you make preparations with your Milwaukee mover, you will be thinking about the process of moving your pets. This is easiest when you are able to move your dog or cat by car. Air travel can be traumatic and uncomfortable for pets, and in the car, you can monitor and see to their needs. What can you do to make the car ride more bearable for your pet? Here are some tips.

Conditioning your dog is the best way to ensure its comfort. Far before your move, try some of these things:

  • Condition your pet to a portable kennel or carrier. Make it known to the pet that this is a safe place for them but putting them in it at home a few times. Include a pillowcase you have slept on, and a familiar toy.
  • Condition your pet to a leash. You will not be able to travel without a leashed pet, and if your pet is pulling and gagging itself at every stop, it will not be comfortable for either of you. Train your pet to wear a halter or collar first, then attach the leash. Training your dog to heel makes a big difference in walking, if you have the time.
  • Condition your pet to the car. Take them on short trips around the block, then on farther trips. If your pet experiences carsickness, ask your vet for a remedy.

Also, having a travel kit for your pet is vital. Include:

  • The cat or dog’s normal food
  • A plastic water dish
  • A blanket and favorite toy
  • The things you need for grooming
  • Paper towel and garbage bags
  • Scooper or appropriate bags to clean up after your pet
  • The pet’s normal treats

Other tips:

  • Consider a vet prescribed tranquilizer to sedate your pet.
  •  Stop regularly to walk your pet and give him water.
  • Don’t leave the pet in the car at all on warm days.

If you follow these tips for a smooth move with your pet, he or she should arrive at the new home comfortably and ready to sniff out the new place. Once your Milwaukee mover has unpacked, give the pet time to explore and get used to everything.
