Tips to Move Cheaply

You probably have a lot going on in your life, and the last thing you want to deal with is a move. But if you’re moving for work or to be closer to family, there’s no way to get around the responsibility of packing and loading a truck. That’s unless you hire a Kansas City mover.

Some people never consider hiring a moving company. When they do the math, they conclude that it’s cheaper to move items themselves. While this may be true, moving is very tedious and time consuming. Frankly, most people don’t have the free time or the energy. This is where a professional moving company comes in handy.

Maybe you can benefit from a professional moving company, but need to keep costs cheap. Here are three ways to tip the scales in your direction.

  • Know all your options. The biggest mistake you can make is hiring the first company you find. You may build a rapport with the moving company, and the company may have an excellent reputation in the community. But if they are the most expensive, you can easily exceed your moving budget. Be smart with your finances and get quotes from at least three different moving companies.
  • Ditch full service. A full-service move can nearly double your cost. Full service includes the moving company packing your house, loading the truck, unloading the truck and perhaps unpacking your belongings. Save yourself some cash and tackle some of these jobs yourself. For example, you can pack your own house and have the moving company load and drive the truck.
  • Move off-season. If you can make it happen, move off-season and save 10%. This is between the months of October and May. Many people move during the spring and summer months, which can drive up rates.
